I've been scooped... and that is a good thing! I've been working on a MOSS 2007 / WSS v3 tips & tricks blog posting for a coupe days now but Andrew Connell's posting blows mine away! Thanks again AC for a great and informative post! Last week Joel Oleson blogged about the warm-up scripts you'll find on the MOSS 2007 Beta 2 Tech Resource DVD. These scripts essentially force a JIT compilation of all pages in a SharePoint site and run STSADM.EXE to warm up the admin interfaces. These are invaluable,...

I took the Introduction to Microsoft Offie SharePoint Server 2007 self assessment last week and nailed the top score (for that 24-hour period). Sweet...

From Andrew Connell: This page contains links and resources specific to Web Content Management (WCM). WCM part of a larger Enterprise Content Management (ECM) strategy that's part of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007. MOSS is built on top of Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) v3. Out of all of the sessions that I attended at TechEd 2006 only three presenters really wowed me. Todd Bleeker and Ted Pattison on MOSS 2007 / SharePoint 2007 and Scott Guthrie on ASP.Net and ATLAS. Here are the links to all of the source from those presentations. For Todd’s artifacts you must register at the MindSharp site: Todd Bleeker's SharePoint Feature Code and Demos Todd Bleeker's SharePoint Content Type Code and Demos Ted Pattison’s Slides and Sample Code ScottGu's Slides ScottGu's...

Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Microsoft Office (VSTO): Creating Multi-Tier ApplicationJohn Durant — dude gets it! This guy in an awesome presenter. Probably the best session of the conference and it isn’t even about 2007 Office System! I wish I could bottle his energy – the dude is a ball of fire! Unfortunately there isn’t a lot to report here since the session was all about shipping products and technologies. I think he had about 6 slides. The rest of the time was spent in...

First session was useless. Damn. One hour I’ll never get back. The topic was Content Types… but the demos were all about clicking around the SP UI. I can figure that out on my own. I want code… and I want lots of it!! This conference is titled “Microsoft Office System Developers Conference 2006” Maybe a more appropriate titled would be “Microsoft Office System GUI-Clicking-Administrator Conference 2006” Jeesh. Show me the c#! Using Workflow In Windows SharePoint...

One message (vibe, transmission, marketing babble?) I’m getting from all of the Microsoft guys is to really think of Office SharePoint Server 2007 (OSS 2007) as a platform for developing applications for your enterprise. This really has my few remaining brain cells spinning. See with SharePoint Products and Technologies 2003 (okay wait. I’m sorry Fitz I’m going to call all of this “stuff” SharePoint. I’m tired of trying to say WSS/SP or SPPT or OSS or Office SharePoint...

I spent the second half of the day in .Net Development on Microsoft SharePoint Technologies . * tracks. Not a lot of in-depth code but Mike Ammerlaan supplied a great overview of WSS development in the Office 2007 world. Here are my notes – not a lot of detail here hopefully that will come in future posts (oh – and I’m sure mistakes are mine not Mike’s): Cross-site groups seem very useful You can finally make required properties (meta data) required. It seems that they have...

Keynote: Pretty typical keynote session – BillG and Steven Sinofsky talked at a pretty high level – explaining some of the business reasons that we should adopt Office 2007. Yeah – yawn. The most notable announcements were that we will be getting Visual Studio Tools for Office v3 CTP – very cool. I’ve been bitching for months about the apparent lack of Visual Studio support in Office 12 (and vise-versa). Looks like I was bitching for nothing (what is new?). Keynote part...

The SharePoint team is posting some great information (even if they can’t spell proliferation). I hope they keep it up. [from this post: SharePoint Team Blog : Rolling up information in SharePoint Sites] As the usage of SharePoint increases, there is a profileration of SharePoint sites. This makes it harder and harder to keep track of where your documents are located and also to see a unified view of your "stuff".In Office SharePoint Server 2007, we are introducing a couple of new web parts...

Awesome post about OSS page anatomy! [from this post: SharePoint Team Blog : Page Anatomy] No this post is not about a popular TV show! We'll cover the integrated framework we are using in the next release of SPS + CMS (breaking news - now officially Office SharePoint Server 2007 - I will cover that in a second post later today) to enable people to create, manage and publish the spectrum of very simple to very sophisticated internet sites. We've learned a lot from a variety of customer feedback on...

Thanks for sharing, Jan!!!! [from this post: SharePoint Web Part Code Snippets for VS 2005] When you want to develop web parts for SharePoint the “traditional” way, it’s good idea to use the Web Part Templates for Visual Studio .NET. These templates will give you a start class to quickly build web parts. Unfortunately these templates are not (yet?) available for Visual Studio 2005. Since Windows SharePoint Services SP2 you can run your WSS sites on .NET 2.0, so you can build your...

[from Steen Molberg: Release of The Blogparts 1.1 - Steen Molberg's Blog] Looks like Steen has done some very cool work to create a set of SharePoint web parts that allows you to create blogs on a standard SharePoint site. …and for the terminology police out there: Steen uses the terms “SharePoint web parts” and “SharePoint site.” I see no reason his web parts would not run on either WSS or SPS...

The SharePoint team discusses Content Management Server and SharePoint integration [from this post: SharePoint Team Blog : Content Management Server and SharePoint] that the upcoming version of MCMS 2002 (which I’ll refer to as ‘CMS’ for the sake of this post) will be built entirely on the Windows SharePoint Services architecture (with SharePoint Portal integrating the new CMS publishing features). I wanted to give some insight into how we went about making this decision...

This is very cool - especially for SharePoint and BizTalk developers. [via: BIA - The BizTalk Intelligence Agency] Often in BizTalk you’ll need to add assemblies to the Global Assembly Cache. In the past I had used a shortcut on my Quick Launch toolbar which opened the GAC, then I’d drop the assembly inside, but there is an easier way.A registry key can be created which allows you to right click the DLL and “GAC it” in one click. The text for the key is below; simply copy/paste...

[via Victor Vogelpoel [Macaw] : Macaw TraceInfo WebPart, or how to view Trace output in a page using only a WebPart] Introducing the Macaw TraceInfo WebPartWhat a pain it is to see your WebPart fail on a SharePoint production server where you cannot simply start Visual Studio and debug the failing code... In many cases, you don't even have (physical) access to the server. If you used Trace statements in your WebPart, then you can configure trace listeners in SharePoint's web.config and have the Trace...

Fitz alleviates some of our fears about FrontPage in his posting Ghosting Schmosting. While it is great that Microsoft has addressed most if not all of the problems associated with using FrontPage with SharePoint technologies I still have to question this Microsoft Office love affair with FrontPage. Microsoft has this great development environment that apparently the Office team has never heard of… it is called Visual Studio. I do not want to have to switch back and forth between Visual Studio...

A couple months back a co-worker sent this link out http://www.msfn.org/win2k3/ that does a great job explaining how to make Windows Server 2003 more workstation-like. Anyone who programs with SharePoint technologies knows there are a few W2K3 annoyances that would be nice to get rid of... like the Shutdown Event Tracker. I strongly suggest you do not get rid of the CTRL-ALT-DEL prompt and do not enable Autologon! You are just asking for trouble when you start circumventing security features. As...

I originally saw the "What is on My PC?" post on Andrew Connell's blog. What a great idea, Andrew! I have to admit that this post is much more for my own reference as it is for the greater good of the community. I hate trying to remember what apps to install when I rebuild my development workstation or build up a new Virtual PC/VM. Yes, I guess a better title for this post would be: What is on My Virtual PC(s)? Recently I drank the Kool-Aid and built up several Virtual PCs to do my hardcore development...
